Thanks for any information. I have built two koi ponds in Tennessee, but obviously Phoenix is much hotter.

yes I just built one in houston tx

you have to dig one part deep so when the weather is hot they have a place to hide. I built a bridge over onside it provided shade and i dug down under the bridge so they would have a cold spot. they have grown very well and dont seem to mind the weather and temp of the water

This a very cheap project for a do it yourselfer. Some basics

1 dig the size hole you need.
2 place a rubber liner in the hole. I use rubber used for roofing.make sure the liner is big enough to lap out of the hole a few feet.
3 place stones around the out side making sure to place a row of stone on the rubber to hold rubber in place.
4 purchase filter and pump system

You now have a pond. Ask around to find out how deep you need to go in your area for freeze.

anyway, the best way to deter herons is to build a slight frame over your pond and cover it with pond netting or fruit tree netting
that will keep the herons out for good

when should i turn them on? wait till it gets colder or now.
the submersable heaters are good for a 300 gallon pond, thats why i get three of them

You should get a thermostat to control your heaters. They can turn on when the temperature drops below a certain level.

You probably shouldn’t let the water get below 40 degrees F.

I have a 7ft by 8ft section that I want to build a concrete koi pond but being a first timer I just wanted to get the most advice possible. so far I have a dirt hole with some cynder bolcks around the outside. Also how easy is it to pack in concrete on a vertical wall with no kind of form to pour it in.

Thanks Kevin

I have only seen one pond made from concrete and that one was short lived. They ended up going to a liner. a pond that size would be easily done with a liner. Concrete will also turn green rather fast because of the algae.those cinder blocks would be great for the edging around the top of your pond. you will need something to hold down the liner if you decide to use one. and the blocks also act as a good back drop for any flowers or plants you put around the pond. Have fun and good luck!!!!

To eliminate green water algae, a UV sterilizer does work. To eliminate hair algae, 1 – 2" blue tilapia fry will eat it all. I put about 20 two inch Oreochromis in my 2000 gallon pond in the spring. They leave the koi alone and like to hide in upturned milk crates that I prop my plants up on. Remove them in the fall, since once the water falls below 50, they cannot take it.

For a pond that size it will cost between $15,000 and $20,000. Just the filter will cost $3,000. Those will be the basic costs for what you have described and for more landscaping around the pond it will probably be more. Your area of the country make a big difference in the price so some areas may be more. If any contractor would give you a bid of under $10,000 then you should run away from them quickly because they do not know what they are doing.

I have a 1700 gallon koi pond and a new 560 gallon per hour pump for my filtration system. Is it too much? Should I adjust it do pump at a lower rate? At what rate is suitable?

Thanks!!

If anything its too small, but a lot depends on what type of filtration you are running. If its a submersible box filter, that pump will be fine. If you are using it for an external system, water fall, etc, you won’t get enough flow. Remember for every foot of height you go up, you loose 100 gal/hr. The only way to know for sure it to test it out.
